Kituntu is located in the North- western part of Tanzania. The word „Kituntu“ can have three meanings:
1. Kituntu means high plateau. It is an area in the Kagera region. 2. Kituntu is a name for a village, that shares its borders with the villages of Katembe and Rwambaizi. 3. Kituntu is a church district in the KAD with which the Biedenkopf district has partnership. The distance fro m Bukoba to Kituntu is about 120 kilometres and it takes about 3 hours driving by car . 40 kilometres are paved, the rest unpaved Due to the difficult economical situation in Tanzania, especially in the Kagera region, it is hard for the district, the parishes and the congregations to raise even this very small amount of money compared to German economic conditions. The Kituntu District has the following structure. Each parish is led by a pastor and each congregation is led by an evangelist. Between 50–600 members belong to a congregation.
Two thirds of the church-members are children and youth.
In each congregation many members, especially women, participate actively. Another example: There are many different choirs History of the Kituntu District In 1937 Rev. Lanky, a German missionary, brought the word of God the first time to Kituntu. In 1938 the first 4 Christians in Kituntu were baptized. The first Christians met for worship in a house of the local king (Omwani-Kalanai) of Igurwa. Later more people were baptized and new congregations were opened such as Runyaga, Katembe, Kishoju, Kinyinya and Maguge. In 1962 these 6 congregations formed parish under the leadership of the Danish missionary Rev. Finn Allan Peterson. More and more congregations were opened such as Muchuba, Kyabayanda, Katwe, Kyanika, Nyakagando and Omurulama. In 1974 another parish Kihanga was formed. Again new congregations were opened, leading to the formation of the Runyaga parish in 1984. In the same year these three parishes formed the Kituntu District. In 2002 the fourth parish, Rugela, was formed. ![]() ![]() |
